Roof Repairs in Bridgwater

Slipped tiles, failed flashings, leaks that only show in a south-westerly. Found, explained and fixed by local roofers who know Bridgwater’s clay roofs.

What counts as a repair

Common repair jobs on Bridgwater roofs

Slipped and cracked clay tiles

A very common repair on older Bridgwater roofs. Double Roman tiles last well, but the nails and battens holding them do not. We replace like with like, sourcing reclaimed or compatible clay so the laps seal again.

Mismatched old repairs

A concrete tile dropped into a clay roof, or a different clay profile forced into a gap, will not lap properly. Many leaks we trace start at exactly that kind of earlier patch.

Chimney flashings and back gutters

Lead at the chimney is where most traced leaks actually start: stepped flashing pulled out of the joint, an abutment patched with mastic, or a back gutter that was never wide enough. See our leadwork page.

Hips and ridges

Georgian and Victorian roofs here are often hipped, which means long runs of hip and ridge tiles. Mortar-bedded ones loosen over time; we re-fix them mechanically, as BS 5534 now requires.

Valleys and parapets

Where two slopes meet, or where a roof sits behind a parapet, water concentrates. Split lead or a blocked outlet shows up as a stain some distance away.

Ornamental gables and finials

Victorian terraces east of the river carry ornamental brick and tile detail made in the town. We repair around it carefully rather than stripping it out.

Honest advice

Four things worth knowing before you book anyone

A repair is usually the right answer

A handful of slipped tiles or one failed flashing is a repair, not a re-roof. If someone quotes you a full re-roof from the pavement without getting up there, be careful.

Clay needs matching clay

Bridgwater made double Roman tiles for three centuries, and Historic England records them on Grade I Castle Street and St Mary’s. Matching the profile is what keeps a repair watertight.

Leaks show up in the wrong place

Water travels along battens and down rafters before it shows on a ceiling. The stain is rarely under the fault, which is why we trace it on the roof.

Open ground, open to the wind

The Met Office records a predominantly south-westerly wind here, with the strongest from between south and north-west. On flat, open land there is little to break it.

Questions people ask

Roof repair FAQs

How quickly can you come out?

For a leak actively coming into the house, as fast as we can get a van to you. That is what our emergency callout service is for. For everything else we book a free site visit, usually within a few days.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. The site visit and the written quote are free, whether or not you go ahead.

Can you match my old Bridgwater tiles?

Usually, with reclaimed tiles or a compatible new double Roman. If we cannot get a match we will tell you before we start, not after.

Will a repair be covered by the guarantee?

Yes. Repairs carry the same 20 year full written guarantee on workmanship and materials as full roofs.

My roof only leaks in certain weather. Is that normal?

Very common. Wind-driven rain gets pushed up under tile laps that stay dry in still weather. It usually points to a lap, flashing or verge rather than a broken tile.

Do I need scaffolding for a small repair?

Not always, but access is the biggest single factor in what a repair costs. Our cost guide explains why.
